The Clipper Round the World Race is a yacht race with no equal, and it is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world. In order to have proper preparation for a race as extreme as the Clipper Race, one must get past the beginner status and move on to become an experienced racer.

Some ocean-racing athletes may be completely new to the idea of the Clipper Race. That shouldn’t be a problem, as there are a number of training programs not as competitive as the Clipper Race’s, which can be more suitable for first-timers. A beginner must choose the right race, maybe a regatta for an organization. There are more mellow races, and a racer must view it as a learning goal.

Ask an experienced racer along for the ride, and consider them as a safety net. A patient pal can be a great teacher, but treat them as just crew so as to not be dependent on them throughout the race. Go spinnaker-less even if the boat has a good spinnaker. This will help the racer become more familiar with the rules. While racing doesn’t require one to know every rule before setting sail, learn the basics so as to not be a burden to other racers.

Make sure to get hold of the Notice of Race to acquire the most important information about the race. Don’t miss out on skipper’s meetings. This solidifies one’s understanding of the race. Follow the leader; imitate better racers, and learn from them.
