Over the past decade, there have been a number of mass shootings in the United States, and the odds of it happening are not going down. It’s important that people know what to do during these situations.

As such, James Feldkamp lists two must-dos in case of a threat.

Be familiar with the surroundings.

As soon as a person steps into an establishment, he or she should immediately look for any emergency exits. These are the first places people should head to in case of an active shooter in the area. If there are multiple threats, any enclosed space such as a room should do. Look for any materials that can be used to barricade doors.

Remain calm.

It’s been said many times, but yes, one of the most important things to do in a crisis is to remain calm. This helps a person think clearly. It keeps a person from doing stupid things such as rushing the threat or revealing his or her position. Remaining calm in the midst of a terror attack allows people to find exits quickly, or even to phone for help immediately.
